Biden Says the U.S. Would Fight for Taiwan, and White House, Once Again, Clarifies Comment
President was interviewed on CBS's "60 Minutes"
President Joe Biden said in an interview that aired Sunday night that the U.S. would go to war if China invades Taiwan — leading to the White House to, once again, state that its policy has not changed.
WHAT BIDEN SAID: Scott Pelley, the “60 Minutes” reporter, asked the president if U.S. forces would defend the island. Biden responded, "“Yes, if in fact, there was an unprecedented attack.” He was asked to clarify that it would be a different response than Washington had vis-a-vis Ukraine — where the U.S. has only provided weapons — and he said, “Yes.”
WHAT THE WHITE HOUSE SAID: A White House spokesperson said the U.S. policy has not changed.

“The president has said this before, including in Tokyo earlier this year. He also made clear then that our Taiwan policy hasn’t changed. That remains true,” the spokesperson said.
HISTORY: In May, Biden drew China’s ire when he once again told reporters in Japan that the U.S. would defend Taiwan militarily if Beijing decides to reclaim the island. Even then, Biden’s comments were quickly corrected by the White House that said the U.S. position of “strategic ambiguity” remains unchanged.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a speech at the time that the U.S. does not support Taiwan’s independence but blamed Beijing for “growing coercion” in the region.
Last October, Biden made headlines during a CNN town hall when he told an audience member that the U.S. would defend Taiwan if China invaded. Anderson Cooper, the moderator, had the president clarify that the U.S. would defend Taiwan, and the president confirmed his position again.
“Yes, we have a commitment to do that,” he said.
There are times that Biden appears out of lockstep with his own administration and the White House was forced to clarify those remarks, saying that there was no change in policy and insisting that the U.S. remains guided by the Taiwan Relations Act for 1979.
The act states that Washington is committed to providing Taipei with arms for its defense. It is under the act that the U.S. described its relationship as that of “strategic ambiguity.”
CHINA’S RESPONSE: Mao Ning, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, told reporters that China has lodged a formal complaint with the U.S. over Biden’s comment.
“We are willing to strive for peaceful reunification with our greatest sincerity and efforts. At the same time, we will not tolerate any activity aimed at secession and reserve the option to take all necessary measures,” she said.
TREND FORECAST: Despite condemnations when they do so, there will be no military forces from other nations that will challenge Communist China’s military might. Indeed, America, with the largest military in the world, has not won a war since World War II and cannot even win against third-world nations such as Afghanistan after invading that nation some 20 years ago.
Should war break out between China and Taiwan, we forecast the Taiwanese military will not aggressively fight back, since doing so would result in millions of deaths and mass destruction.
