Antony Blinken, the U.S. secretary of state, met briefly on Thursday with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to repeat President Biden’s message from last week that Washington is prepared to continue supporting Ukraine until it emerges victorious — which nobody seems to be able to define.
A senior State Department official told the BBC that the discussion lasted less than 10 minutes and Blinken said the U.S. will support Ukraine for “as long as it takes.”
Blinken “disabused” Lavrov of any idea that U.S. support for Ukraine is wavering, the official said. The New York Times reported that the meeting was unexpected.
Besides Ukraine, Blinken told Lavrov that Moscow should rejoin the New START treaty and Russia should release Paul Whelan, the American citizen who has been imprisoned in the country.
Russia said Blinken requested the meeting. The State Department did not immediately respond to an email from The Trends Journal seeking confirmation. The Times said Blinken indicated earlier in the day that he did not have plans to meet with Lavrov.
Blinken told a Wall Street Journal CEO council in December that the U.S.’s focus is “to make sure that Ukraine has in its hands what it needs to defend itself, what it needs to push back against the Russian aggression, to take back territory that’s been seized from it since Feb. 24, to make sure as well that it has the support economically and on a humanitarian basis to withstand what’s happening in the country every single day.”

READY TO DIE FOR UKRAINE? RUSSIA WARNS OF NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION
He told Matt Murray, the head editor at the paper, that the U.S. will continue to let Ukraine determine the appropriate time to negotiate and “where they want to go.”
Lavrov could be seen telling reporters: Western attempts to save the Nazi regime in Kiev are futile. He also said Ukraine was encouraged to continue the war when the country was ready for negotiation last March.
Russia accused the West of turning work on the G20 agenda into a “farce,” Reuters reported. Moscow said it was a naked attempt by the West to shift responsibility for their economic failures onto Russia.

U.S. SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE WAR FALLING: ONLY 19 PERCENT HAVE CONFIDENCE IN BIDEN’S WAR STRATEGY
A recently released poll found that just 19 percent of the American public have a “great deal” of confidence in President Joe Biden’s handling of the Ukraine War—with about 25 percent saying that the U.S. should not play any role in the war.
The Associated Press and NORC poll found that 54 percent of Americans disapprove of Biden’s handling of the U.S.’s relationship with Russia amid the conflict. The poll found a decrease in support among Republicans and Democrats from last year when 63 percent of Democrats and 28 percent of Republicans were in favor of the support. The poll now found support for the war at about 59 percent among Democrats and 21 percent among Republicans.
Biden visited Kyiv last week to show continued support for the war and promise a new injection of $500 million in weapons. His visit was meant to show Russia that the West will not stop its weapon transfers.
The U.S. poll was released at about the same time as Ipsos conducted a poll in Canada for the Global News.
The poll, which was released at the war’s year anniversary, found the number of Canadians who believe the country should stay out of the fight increased from 20 percent to 25 percent.
The AP/NORC survey that found just 19 percent of Americans have a “great deal” of confidence in Biden’s handling of Ukraine, 37 percent said they have “some” confidence in his ability. About 43 percent of those polled said they hardly have any confidence in the president.
About 49 percent of Americans polled said they support the U.S.’s involvement as long as it is minimal. Just 26 percent of those polled said the U.S. should play a major role in the conflict.
TRENDPOST: The U.S. is not fighting a “proxy” war with Russia; we are in WWIII. Two days before Russia’s invasion, The Trends Journal’s cover showed a nuclear explosion and read “FROM COVID WAR, TO UKRAINE WAR, TO WORLD WAR.”

Putin said, again, last week that the West is supporting Ukraine’s war effort in hopes to destroy Russia, which he said will not happen. Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and top security official, said Moscow must achieve its goals in Ukraine or Russia could disappear.
“If Russia stops the special military operation without achieving victory, Russia will disappear, it will be torn to pieces,” he said.
Putin conceded that it would be unlikely that Russia would be able to defeat the collective West in a conventional war, but he said Moscow has nuclear superiority. He said the Kremlin will “pay increased attention to strengthening the nuclear triad.”
Putin announced last week that Russia was suspending its involvement in the New START Treaty with Washington, which was the last pact in place between the countries.
Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, a Dutch politician and member of parliament, told The Wall Street Journal that Europe is “all-in.”
“We have also realized that it is not only the safety and security of Ukraine that is at stake but also our own,” he said.
