If there was ever a putt in politics, it’s the “office statement.”
They’re often a thing of beauty. The language is debated with staffers and probed to see if there are any potential issues that could stir a new controversy.
These statements are generally bullet proof. Staffers, who would be otherwise be bored, get to have fun with them and show off the wit that comes with an Ivy League education.
BLINKEN SAYS U.S. DOES NOT SUPPORT TAIWAN INDEPENDENCE
That is why it was so strange to read House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office’s statement to the Associated Press after her husband, Paul Pelosi’s arrest Saturday night for allegedly drunk driving in Napa Valley -the wine capital of the U.S.
Pelosi’s office was quick to present an alibi for the speaker.
Her office told the AP that she “will not be commenting on this private matter which occurred while she was on the East Coast.”

The report seemed to stand up her side of the story, and said the speaker had been in Providence, Rhode Island, on Sunday, where she delivered the commencement address at Brown University.
Pelosi’s statement seemed to be cold, especially since this is the man she married in 1963 and raised five children together. Does she approach everything in life through the eyes of a hardened politician determined not to be undone by the misdeeds of a spouse?
This is a minor league statement to cobble together. It should have been: “Nancy Pelosi is relieved to hear there were no injuries and will be headed back to California to be with her husband. This is a private matter and our office will not comment further.”
Slate also picked up on the statement and ran a headline, “Nancy Pelosi Carefully Distances Self From Own Husband After Wine Country Porsche DUI.”
Paul Pelosi was identified in The New York Times as an investor who tends to stay out of the limelight. They’ve been married since 1963.
Paul Pelosi was driving in a new Porsche about five miles from the couple’s Napa Valley estate just before midnight when the crash occurred on State Route 29. There were no injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and released from custody at the Napa Valley Detention Center on Sunday morning. Bail had been set at $5,000.

Sorry Gerald she was too drunk herself to comment!! Her job is just to get wasted at the capital
Jimmy Dore made a great point about the DUI incident. It's not like he couldn't afford a taxi or a driver - which leads one to believe that he does it all the time.
