Israeli media says Trump, Netanyahu are putting on an orchestrated show

Could Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect who ran a campaign accusing the genocidal Biden administration of being insufficiently loyal to Israel, be the man to force Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to finally agree to a ceasefire in Gaza?

The Times, citing Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, said the ceasefire is set to begin on Sunday. The paper noted that the deal needs to be ratified by the Knesset.

Trump took a victory lap on Truth Social and announced the deal.

“This EPIC ceasefire agreement could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November, as it signaled to the entire World that my Administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans, and our Allies. I am thrilled American and Israeli hostages will be returning home to be reunited with their families and loved ones,” he posted.

He said he will work with Israel to make sure Gaza never becomes a “terrorist safe haven” again.

How could Trump achieve such a diplomatic coup?

“President Trump, according to a source familiar with the details, has already promised Netanyahu and Minister Ron Dermer that if they agree to a ceasefire and the withdrawal of IDF forces from the Gaza Strip, he will support Israel retroactively if it decides to return to fighting and violate the ceasefire. This may solve one issue for Netanyahu, but it is not certain that it is enough to calm the coalition members from the right-wing, nationalist and settler wing, who may see this as an unacceptable concession. Other sources claim that everything that is happening before the public, including the right-wing opposition, is part of the same orchestrated show.”

Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s extremist settler and finance minister, called any ceasefire deal a “catastrophe for Israel’s national security,” according to The Times of Israel.

The paper said he continued, “We will not be part of a surrender deal that would include releasing terrorists, stopping the war and dissolving the achievements that were bought with much blood, and abandoning many hostages.”

U.S. President Joe Biden announced a ceasefire deal last year that would come in three phases, but allows Israel to pull out at any time it wants, which Hamas said was unacceptable. Netanyahu has said he will not agree to a permanent ceasefire in Gaza until Hamas is eliminated, which even his own military said is an impossibility.

Top Israelis have said Israel should agree to a ceasefire, get the hostages, and then start fighting again.

Benny Gantz, the National Unity chair who resigned from Netanyahu’s government, said in an interview in June that the return of the hostages should be the priority.

“If there is a change in the fighting and our hostages are returned, and we do what needs to be done in the Gaza Strip in a year, or in two years, that’s not an issue. I want the hostages home, I want to have strong security, and then we can continue what needs to be continued,” he said last year.

The framework for the deal continues to be the one presented by outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden last year that would be implemented in phases. Phase 2 would include a “permanent end to hostilities” and the exchange of remaining living hostages. Israel would also have to withdraw its forces from the entire enclave.
