Iran’s decision to hold off on a retaliatory strike in response to Israel’s high-profile assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a top leader of Hamas, could be Tehran’s strategy to prevent giving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the war that he wants.

“It's clear that Netanyahu wants war, and some in the United States want war Iran,” Alastair Crooke, the former British diplomat, told Andrew Napolitano’s “Judging Freedom.” “So, if they want war, why give it? If this is what their objective is, and this is what Netanyahu particularly needs… quickly… don't do it. Don't help them out. Go back to attrition. Get back in control of the escalatory process.”

“But why give it to him [Netanyahu] on a plate?” Crooke asked.
Crooke said attrition has been working well for Iran, and it would be foolish to be led into a trap by the U.S. and Israel that wants a major reaction. He said waiting is not a sign of weakness, but rather a “very clear sense of strategy” by the Iranians.
Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, said Sunday that Tehran’s response to Haniyeh’s killing will be “measured.”
“Iran[‘s] reaction to Israeli terrorist attack in Tehran is definitive, and will be measured & well calculated. We do not fear escalation, yet do not seek it — unlike Israel,” he posted on X, according to The Times of Israel.
