The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) passed a resolution on Sunday that said Israel’s actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide.
The association is made up of 500 members, and 28 percent took part in the vote. Of those, 86 percent said the Israeli government has “engaged in systematic and widespread crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide, including indiscriminate and deliberate attacks against the civilians and civilian infrastructure.”
The BBC said the IAGS is the world's “largest professional association of genocide scholars and includes a number of Holocaust experts.”
The IAGS called on Tel Aviv to “cease all acts that constitute genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in Gaza, including deliberate attacks against and killing of civilians including children; starvation; deprivation of humanitarian aid, water, fuel, and other items essential to the survival of the population; sexual and reproductive violence; and forced displacement of the population.”
Melanie O’Brien, the IAGS president, called the resolution “a definitive statement from experts in the field of genocide studies that what is going on on the ground in Gaza is genocide,” according to The Guardian.
Israel has been formally accused of committing genocide by South Africa and several other countries at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
