“They think they’re accomplishing something,” he told “Daniel Davis Deep Dive.” “What they’re accomplishing is the destruction of the status quo that they may not have liked, but they’re setting the stage for the emergence of something much, much worse. That was always the objection that we [the U.S.] had to destroying Syria.”
He said Bashar al-Assad has been replaced by a very dangerous group that reports to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has “made his argument repeatedly that the Israelis cannot have any of the spoils of this war.”
“In other words, he is not going to tolerate the Israeli annexation of land,” MacGregor said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already taken a victory lap after the fall of Assad in Syria and said it could not have happened without the IDF’s thrashing of Hezbollah and Iran, as his forces took positions in a once-demilitarized part of the Golan Heights, which has been illegally occupied by Israel since 1967.
