MACGREGOR: Ukraine Mineral Deal Makes No Sense
Trump needed a win after failing to live up to his promise to end the war in 24 hours
U.S. President Donald Trump, who failed on his campaign promise to end the Ukraine War in 24 hours, needed a “win,” so he landed a Ukraine mineral deal that makes no sense, Retired U.S. Army Col. Douglas MacGregor told Judge Andrew Napolitano’s “Judging Freedom.”
Napolitano asked MacGregor why the U.S. would sign such a deal as it tries to negotiate to end the war.
MacGregor theorized that Trump’s team, fully aware of his “incautious statements” about the conflict, decided that it would be worthwhile to get something down on paper that looks like “Americans are going to benefit.”
“In other words — somehow or other Americans are going to get a $1 trillion worth of mineral wealth out of Ukraine,” he said. “Well, then, the president looks like a winner. This is the transactional mentality that he has adopted, and everyone goes home happy. In truth, they’re never going to see anything remotely like that.”
He said he was especially troubled that U.S. military assistance is tied to the deal.
