Russian President Vladimir Putin is not justified in starting the Ukraine War, but he is not “unpleasant” if you meet him, French President Emmanuel Macron said during an interview with journalists on Monday.
“When you meet him like that, he’s not unpleasant,” Macron said, according to Russian outlet RT. “That’s the paradox.”
UKRAINE’S TOP DIPLOMAT SAYS NO ONE HAS DONE ENOUGH TO HELP KYIV
The French president made it clear that there is “nothing to justify starting a war,” the report said.
Unlike the U.S. and UK, which has been anti-Russia since before the war even broke out, Macron seemed to take somewhat of a pragmatic approach to the conflict and has been one of the only Western leaders still in touch with Putin.
At times, Macron has rubbed Ukraine the wrong way.
In June, Macron said, “We must not humiliate Russia so that the day when the fighting stops we can build an exit ramp through diplomatic means. I am convinced that it is France's role to be a mediating power.”
Dmitro Kuleba, the Ukrainian foreign minister, took to Twitter at the time and posted, “Calls to avoid humiliation of Russia can only humiliate France and every other country that would call for it.”
Any world leader who does not vow complete loyalty to Zelensky’s effort to win back every inch of his country is met by anger in the Western media that has become nothing more than mouthpieces for governments that hate Russia. Instead of calling for peace, these outlets only push more war.
Henry Kissinger, the former U.S. secretary of state, also felt the wrath of Kyiv for stating that Ukraine may have to cede land in order for a peaceful settlement. Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Zelensky, said Kissinger would as easily “allow to take Poland or Lithuania away,” in a reference to WWII.
Macron gave his own theory as to why Putin decided to go to war in Ukraine.
“Basically, he launched this war to recover territories and to extend Russia’s perimeter to the empire that once existed. He took a very heavy responsibility for himself, his people, obviously for the people of Ukraine, and for us all. This is how I see things,” he said.
RT noted that it would be wrong to suggest that Russia is somehow on the verge of defeat in Ukraine. The report said he asserted that Ukrainian fighters were nowhere near achieving a battlefield victory.
