MEARSHEIMER: Trump's Wasting His Time
University of Chicago professor says there's no peace deal that both Russia and Ukraine will accept so Trump is, in effect, wasting his time with the current proposal
John Mearsheimer, the University of Chicago professor, told Judge Andrew Napolitano’s “Judging Freedom” on Friday that it seems like U.S. President Donald Trump is wasting his time on a Ukraine peace deal because there is no proposal that both sides would agree on.
Napolitano asked the professor why he believes Trump keeps providing Ukraine with weapons, and he said it is likely because the president does not want to be seen as the leader who lost Ukraine.
“He doesn't want to see Ukraine quickly collapse, and then he ends up getting blamed for it,” Mearsheimer said. “I think that he believes there is a better alternative here, and that is to work out a negotiated settlement…that way, he not only doesn’t get blamed, but maybe he wins a Nobel Peace Prize. So, I think this is what he’s up to. The problem he faces, as I said a minute ago, is that there is no peace agreement that he can push forward that both sides will accept. So he’s just, in effect, wasting his time.”
