WHERE: A land-based intercontinental ballistic missile was test-fired from Plesetsk, which is about 800 miles north of Moscow.
There was another launch of the Sineva intercontinental ballistic missile from the Barents Sea from a submarine and the Russian Defense Ministry published video of a sea-baed launch of a hypersonic missile "Zircon" during during the drills. Tu-95 strategic bombers also launched cruise missiles at practice targets, CBS News reported.
WASHINGTON ALERTED: The Kremlin informed Washington about the drills prior to the exercises. Ned Price, a U.S. State Department spokesman, said, “"While Russia engages in unprovoked aggression and reckless nuclear rhetoric, these notification measures do ensure we're not taken by surprise and reduce the risks of misperception," EuroNews reported.
NATO’S OWN DRILLS: Last week, the alliance began its own nuclear “deterrence” drills amid the increased tension.
Exercise "Steadfast Noon" involves 14 countries and up to 60 aircraft of various types, including fourth and fifth generation fighter jets, as well as surveillance and tanker aircraft. As in previous years, US B-52 long-range bombers will take part; this year, they will fly from Minot Air Base in North Dakota. Training flights will take place over Belgium, which is hosting the exercise, as well as over the North Sea and the United Kingdom. No live weapons are used.
Sergei Shoigu, the Russian defense minister, told Russian TV that the aim of the practice was to carry out "a massive nuclear strike by the strategic nuclear forces in retaliation for the enemy's nuclear strike."
