Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO chief, said Friday that it is up to Germany to decide if it wants to send Patriot Missile Systems into Ukraine after the request from Poland.
A top Polish official appealed to Germany on Wednesday to send Ukraine the Patriot Missile Systems that had been promised to Warsaw after the blast.
“I have asked Germany to have the proposed Polish Patriot batteries transferred to Ukraine and deployed at the western border,” Mariusz Blaszczak, the Polish defense minister said.
DW.com reported that Berlin flinched.
German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said, "Patriots are part of NATO's integrated air defense, meaning they are intended to be deployed on NATO territory."
“Any use outside NATO territory would require prior discussions with NATO and the allies,” she said.
Stoltenberg said he would urge NATO officials meeting in Bucharest next week to increase deliveries to Ukraine.
Poland has been trying to get NATO to join the fight against Russia in Ukraine.
We reported that the Polish Foreign Ministry issued an early statement blaming Russia for the missile strike that killed two near its border with Ukraine earlier this month.
After the missile strike that turned out to be fired by Ukrainian forces, Warsaw decided that it was appropriate to send F-16s to escort its soccer team’s passenger plane, a clear effort to sell fear to the public.
But Poland has no intention of fighting Russia.
Andrzej Duda, the Polish president, was caught in a prank phone call admitting that he does not want to go to war with Russia and is doing everything he can to avoid the conflict.
But Warsaw seems perfectly content with dragging out the war.
The Patriot Missile System is “a highly mobile air defense guided missile system designed to engage and intercept any aerial threats whether it be aircraft or tactical ballistic missiles under any weather conditions and in natural or induced environment,” according to the Army.
Raytheon Missiles & Defense said it has built more than 240 Patriot fire units and delivered them to customers in 17 nations. (It is worth noting that Lloyd Austin, the U.S. defense secretary, worked as a board member at Raytheon before taking the Pentagon’s top job.
AntiWar.org noted that sending the systems into Ukraine would “significantly escalate NATO involvement in the war with Russia.”
“Sending the Patriots to Poland would require deploying German troops to operate them, which would mean direct NATO intervention in the war,” the report said.
Wait a minute...
