Russia has behaved in a very “controlled manner” during its nearly three-year-long war with Ukraine and has not released the full power of its military, Scott Ritter, the former UN weapons inspector, told the “Dialogue Works” podcast.
Ritter was asked about Ukraine’s recent decision to assassinate Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov in Moscow on 17 December. Ritter called the killing “criminal behavior” not “military behavior” because militaries “don’t assassinate military leaders.”
“The initial problem to this is that the United States and NATO are associating with these criminal elements,” he said.
Ritter considered how Russia could respond.
“The Russians have behaved in a very controlled manner,” he continued. “Anyone who thinks Russia is struggling on the battlefield…you need to understand that Russia has not brought to bear anything near the totality of the military force that can be brought to bear on this issue. Russia is fully capable of destroying Ukraine in totality without using nuclear weapons. If Russia wanted to, this war would be over in a month.”

The New York Times ran an article yesterday that quoted Western officials who said the assassination would likely have no impact on the outcome on the battlefield. The paper called the situation on the ground more desperate for the Ukrainians than at any time since the invasion.

Ralph Goff, a former senior official at the CIA, told the paper that assassination is “strategy of necessity because it’s all they got.”
“They’re trying to turn the heat up on the Russian elites to force Putin to make a deal,” he told the paper. “I think it’s a flawed strategy. If they’re not careful they’ll create the opposite effect. They anger the Russians so much that they say we’re not interested in negotiating.”
TRENDPOST: The Trends Journal has said since the start of the war that Ukraine had no chance of defeating Russia. Just before the war, top NATO officials made it clear that Ukraine was not a member and not protected under Article 5.
