Top Russian Subs Will be Armed With Zircon Missiles as Ukraine War Expands
The Ukraine War may be coming to a coast near you

Russia announced Monday that it will arm new nuclear-powered submarines with its Zircon missiles, which are capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and travel at nine times the speed of sound.
Alexei Rakhmanov, chief executive officer of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation told the Russian outlet RIA that “multi-purpose nuclear submarines of the Yasen-M project will” be regularly equipped with these missiles. Newsweek reported that these submarines have been referred to as the “crown jewel of the contemporary Russian Navy.”

Mark Grove, a senior lecturer at the University of Lincoln's Maritime Studies Center at the Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, U.K, told the magazine that the Yasen-class submarines are a challenge to Western subs and “will require, clearly, a greater effort in order to track and neutralize.”
The Naval Post reported: The Yasen-M project uses “low magnetic steel to minimize its magnetic signal, making it far more difficult to detect. Unlike prior Soviet vessels, the Yasen class are multi-mission vessels comparable to the American Seawolf or Virginia classes.”
Earlier this year, Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s national security council, called for Zircon missiles to be placed about 100 miles off the coast of the U.S. in retaliation for Washington’s support of Ukraine.
“1000 km range with hypersonic Mach 9 and the ability to use any payload with a guarantee overcome any missile defense,” Medvedev posted at the time, referring to the the frigate Admiral Gorshkov. “Let it [Gorshkov] stand somewhere 100 miles from the coast, closer to the Potomac River.”
We reported in May that Moscow said it successfully fired its Zircon from a warship in the Barents Sea that traveled 625 miles and hit its target in the White Sea. In April, Russia also successfully test fired its new Sarmat superheavy Intercontinental Ballistic Missile that can reportedly deploy 10 or more nuclear warheads on each missile.
