The missile that struck Poland Tuesday that brought the world to the brink of WWIII was fired by Ukrainian forces responding to a Russian missile bombardment, a report said, citing a preliminary investigation.
The Associated Press, citing three U.S. officials, said preliminary evidence suggests that the missile was fired in an attempt to intercept the Russian rockets. The Kremlin denied any involvement in the strike, and blamed Poland for the “deliberate provocation to escalate situation with their statement on alleged impact of ‘Russian’ rockets at Przewodów.”
The strike occurred while Russia conducted a massive missile strike across Ukraine that involved 85 projectiles. A projectile hit an area where grain was drying in Przewodów, which is a village near the border with Ukraine.
Two people were killed in the blasts that were initially blamed on two stray Russian missiles. Andrzej Duda, the Polish president, said, however, that there was no “conclusive evidence at the moment as to who launched this missile.”
“It was most likely a Russian-made missile, but this is all still under investigation at the moment,” he said.
President Joe Biden said late Tuesday that it was unlikely that the missiles were fired by Russia due to their trajectories.
RT.com reported that Russia's Mash Telegram channel published a photo of what it identified as a fragment from an S-300 defense system missile, which is Soviet-era equipment is used by Ukraine.
