Ukraine War Expands Into Russia, We Are in WWIII
Kremlin says attack on Belgorod is an attempt by Ukraine to distract from the loss of Bakhmut
NOTE TO READERS: The Trends Journal has been opposed to Russia’s invasion into Ukraine from the beginning, but we called for peace negotiations because Kyiv cannot defeat Russia and, as each day passes, the risk of a nuclear strike increases. This attack in Belgorod is just the beginning. Consider subscribing here.
The Kremlin said Monday that a group of Ukrainian saboteurs entered the border city of Belgorod and are in an hours-long clash with Russian law enforcement and military, according to reports.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the region’s governor, took to Telegram to blame the attack on a Ukrainian commando unit had crossed into Grayvoron district, a claim that Ukraine has denied, RT, the Russian news outlet, reported.
“The situation remains extremely tense. A sabotage and reconnaissance group, the Ministry of Defense and all law enforcement agencies have entered the territory to carry out combat missions to protect our country,” he said.
“Work is underway to push them out from Russian territory and to destroy this sabotage group. There are enough forces and resources in place,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin press secretary said.
Kyiv said a a Ukraine-based Russian militia called the Liberty of Russia Legion is conducting the operation.
Mikhaylo Podolyak, Ukrainian presidential advisor, told The BBC that his country was watching events in Belgorod “with interest,” but is not involved.
"As you know, tanks are sold at any Russian military store, and underground guerrilla groups are composed of Russian citizens," he said.
Peskov said the the attack was an attempt by Ukrainian forces to “mitigate political fallout from the fall of the Donbass stronghold of Artyomovsk, known as Bakhmut.”
Ukraine claims to still have a stronghold in the city.
TRENDPOST: We remind our readers that Ukraine has carried out missions to sabotage Russian targets already and Zelensky himself said his new goal is to expel Russian forces from the country and retake Crimea.
But unlike the propaganda you read in the mainstream media, Russia did not attack Crimea in 2014.
The Russian military already had a presence there for some 200 years. Under a lease agreement (which did not expire until 2047), negotiated when Russia granted independence to Ukraine, its Black Sea Fleet is based at Sevastopol port in Crimea.
Furthermore, Crimea would likely still be a part of Ukraine if the U.S. had not orchestrated a coup to overthrow the government of the democratically elected president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych.
