Ukraine's Parliament Angers Poland After Tweet Praising Bandera
Ukraine has raised concern with earlier comments about the man many say was behind the genocide of Poles and Jews.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took issue with a since-deleted tweet by Ukraine’s parliament celebrating the birthday of Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian nationalist leader who has been blamed for ethnic cleansing and collaboration with Nazis.
The Ukrainian parliament posted that Bandera would have been 114 today. The elected body cited Bandera when referring to its goals against Russia. The post read, “supreme victory of Ukrainian nationalism will be when the Russian Empire ceases to exist,” RT.com, the Russian news outlet, reported.
Bandera was killed six decades ago by Soviet intelligence agents and is viewed as a father figure by some Ukrainians. Viktor Yushchenko, who was Ukraine president in 2005, awarded Bandera the title “Hero of Ukraine.” It was later revoked by Viktor Yanukovych, whose government, as we have greatly detailed in Trends Journals, was overthrown with the backing of the United States.
Morawiecki told reporters on Monday that Poland is “extremely critical, very, very negative towards any glorification or even reminders of Bandera.”

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, head of the Polish People’s Party, also tweeted, “Bandera is responsible for genocide. Remembrance of a criminal by the Ukrainian parliament will not build good Polish-Ukrainian relations…[which] can only be built on truth.”
The report noted that the parliament also tweeted an image of Ukraine’s top general, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, under a painting of Bandera.
“A fight against the Russian empire is currently underway,” the post read, according to Notes From Poland. “And the guidelines of Stepan Bandera are well known to the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.”

This is not the first time that Bandera’s support in Ukraine raised concerns, but the Western media refuses to cover the story.
Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s ambassador to Berlin who is known for his tough-guy act, faced backlash in July after he defended Bandera.
Bandera was the head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, which was accused of massacres and ethnic cleansing of Poles and Jews.
Melnyk denied the claim that Bandera was a killer. One journalist cited a propaganda leaflet signed by Bandera that called for Russians, Poles, Hungarian, and Jews to be “wiped out” and Melnyk stuck by his earlier comment.
The Israeli embassy said at the time that Melnyk’s comments were a “distortion of the historical facts,” and the Polish deputy foreign minister posted online: “Such an opinion and such words are absolutely unacceptable.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the purpose of the military action was, in part, to purge Ukraine of its “Nazi” nationalist leadership.

Glenn Greenwald, the journalist, shared a part of the interview with Melnyk, and posted, “When you watch Ukrainian officials lovingly interviewed by CNN or BBC, they often have photos of national hero Stepan Bandera on their wall. He’s a Nazi collaborator who mass-murdered Jews and Poles.”
Also absent in the coverage, according to an April 2022 poll, 74 percent of Ukrainians are now viewing him favorably according to the Rating group. Highly loved, in celebration of his birthday, each year his supporters march through the streets of the capital, Kyiv, in a torchlight procession.
