The 18-month-old war in Ukraine has put those still living in the country in dire economic circumstances, with nearly a quarter of the population living in poverty, according to a new report.
The Wall Street Journal, citing the United Nations, reported last week that about one-fifth of the country is now reliant on humanitarian aid to survive. The report said 44 percent of households in the country said they did not have enough money to cover essential needs, and 2.4 million are now unemployed because the economy shrank 30 percent in 2022.
Earlier reports have said unemployed Ukrainians have turned to performing odd jobs and have pawned some of their valuable possessions.
BIDEN: U.S. RUNNING OUT OF AMMO
The World Bank said poverty in the country rose from 5.5 percent in 2021 to 24.2 percent in 2022, and those who live in rural communities have been hit the hardest. Besides not having jobs, Ukrainians were hit with a 20.2 percent inflation rate in 2022. (The rate was 9.3 percent in 2021.)
The U.S. has provided more than $605 million in humanitarian aid to Ukraine in 2023 and $2.1 billion since the onset of the war. The U.K. has provided Ukraine with £1.5 billion in economic and humanitarian support since February 2022.
TRENDPOST: The Ukraine War has been a humanitarian calamity. The Trends Journal has been opposed to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade, but we laid out some of the history and why the Russian leader believed it was justified.
Ukraine, one of Europe’s most corrupt countries, has pulled in an identified $170 billion in humanitarian, financial, and military aid since the war started, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
The largess has raised concerns about how the funding has been tracked.
The fact remains that this war has never been about the preservation of Ukrainian lives; this is a war based solely on the slow bleed of Russia. President Joe Biden admitted Sunday that he will not accept Ukraine into NATO as long as the war is ongoing.
“If the war is going on, then we’re all in war,” Biden told CNN. “We’re at war with Russia, if that were the case.”
