Israel Could Turn to Nukes: Ex-CIA Analyst

Israel promised to strike Iranian targets and Iran promised to respond, which could result in Tel Aviv turning to nuclear weapons that would “literally change the world.”

Larry C. Johnson, the former CIA analyst, said in an interview published Friday that Israel should think twice before carrying out a major attack on Iran.

“Iran is going to respond, and respond immediately,” he told the “Dialogue Works” podcast. “And it will then cause significant damage to both the infrastructure, and military personnel, and possibly civilians in Israel. Israel is going to get hit in a way that it is never been hit before and its entire 76-year existence.”

He continued, “They could get hurt in such a way, that if [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu survives….they could use nuclear weapons.”

Johnson said that would be an escalatory ladder that would “literally change the world.”

Johnson said one of Israel's problems is that it “reads its own press clippings” and is convinced that its military is all-powerful when really it is not and has yet to defeat Hamas in Gaza, which is not even close to the power of the Iranian military.

Yoav Gallant, the head of the Israeli military, visited IDF aircrews at the Hatzerim base last week and said the reason that the retaliatory strike on Iran is taking so long is because it will be decisive.

“After we strike in a red, everyone will understand what you did in the preparation and training process,” he said, according to The Times of Israel.

Iran carried out a major strike on Israel on 1 October in response to a string of Israeli assassinations, including Ismail Haniyeh, a top Hamas official, who was in Tehran for the presidential inauguration in July. Israel has promised to respond to Tehran’s retaliatory strike. The U.S., at least publicly, told Tel Aviv not to strike nuclear targets or oil fields. Iran has said it will respond to any Israeli escalation with an escalation of its own.

Gallant struck a confident tone with the aircrews at the base and said, “Everyone who dreamed a year ago of beating us and attacking us paid a heavy price and are no longer in that dream.”
