KNIVES OUT IN SYRIA: Israel Will Take as Much Land as it Can, Turkey's Troop Buildup Worries U.S.
Mearsheimer says he believes Israel's goal is to wreck Syria.
The swift fall of Syria’s Bashar al-Assad last week has left a vacuum in the country that will likely result in Israel, Turkey, and the U.S. all wanting their piece of the pie.
John Mearsheimer, the University of Chicago professor, told Daniel Davis’s “Deep Dive” on Monday that he believes Israel will push “as far as they can” go in Syria, “and they know they can get away with it because the United States supports them unconditionally.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel will continue to hold on to the stolen Golan Heights and “cause it to blossom.” Israel said it will also bring more troops and supplies to its new outpost on Mount Hermon in southern Syria because of the latest security threat on its border, despite pressure from its neighbors and the UN.
Mearsheimer noted how the U.S. and Israel have been bombing Syria since Assad’s ouster — which is just after its bombing campaign in Lebanon and while it is carrying out a genocide in Gaza.
He said Israel does not have the capability with the U.S. to carry out such a destructive campaign in the region, “and we have no ability, because of the power of the Israel lobby to tell the Israelis, ‘No.’ So they can pretty much do anything they want.”
“I think if Israel had its way, it would do this to every Arab and Islamic country in the Middle East.” -Mearsheimer

“And Syria is wrecked,” he said, noting that he believes the U.S. and Turkey played a much bigger role in destroying the country.
The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the U.S. is growing concerned about Turkey’s growing military presence in northern Syria, “raising alarm that Ankara is preparing for a large-scale incursion into territory held by American-backed Syrian Kurds.”
Ilham Ahmed, an official in the Syrian Kurds’ civilian administration, told the paper that he informed Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, that Turkey’s goal is to “establish de facto control over our land before you take office, forcing you to engage with them as rulers of our territory.”
Trump told a press conference Monday that Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a “very smart guy.”
“Nobody knows what the final outcome is goning to be in the region,” Trump said, according to Politico. “Nobody knows who will rule in the final. I believe it is Turkey. Turkey is very smart, he is a very smart guy and he’s very tough. Turkey did an unfriendly takeover without a lot of lives being lost.”
The New York Times noted that the “shape of the new Syrian government” is still being determined, but will be led by the U.S.-Israeli-Turkish Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
Wa’el Alzayat, a Syria expert, told the paper that he believes Ankara will have the most sway on what happens inside Turkey “for the foreseeable future.”
Mearsheimer said he does not know of anyone who thinks these rebels will be able to restore order there.
“And, I think, from Israel’s point of view, this is a perfectly fine situation,” he said. “I think if Israel had its way, it would do this to every Arab and Islamic country in the Middle East.”
U.S. troops have been in Syria since 2015 with their made-up mandate to assist Kurdish-led forces in the fight against ISIS. Syria accused the U.S. of occupying about 20 percent of its country to steal its resources.
PUBLISHER’S NOTE: As Gerald Celente has been stating since America’s illegal invasion of Iraq, based on lies that Saddam Hussain had weapons of mass destruction, “Do you think America would invade if Iraq’s major export was broccoli?” The same with Syria and Libya… it’s all about oil and U.S. domination.
