I did that with my credit union, which I've been with for 35 years. Weiss rated it a D-minus. After what happened to SVB, Silvergate, and First Republic a few months back, I wasn't comfortable dealing with a D-minus financial institution, so I immediately closed my accounts there and moved my $$ to a credit union a few miles up the road, which Weiss rated a B+. I've been much happier with the new credit union, even though I still buy T-Bills through TreasuryDirect.
Are people really unbanking themselves, or are they just broke and that's why deposits/holdings are down?
I lean towards the latter. Most people have no idea what's going on. C19 stimmy money is drying up, as are there savings, jobs, and opportunities.
also, aren't some people (those w/ $$$) moving it to rolling short term t bills at the US treasury paying 5+%?
Yea some that are waiting for the crash are holding a lot of funds in short-term (3 month and 1 year T-bills).
But that's people that know what's going on, and let's be honest that's a fairly low number that'll buy T-bills out of the total population.
Yep, that's what I'm doing... why stay at a bank/credit union paying 2.5% when I can get double that in short term T-Bills.
There are some high interest accounts via online banks that are around 4% too. T-bills are safer I'd say though.
I agree about T-bills being safer. I mean, heck, if the government fails, we're in a lot bigger trouble than losing some money in T-bills.
Btw, have you ever seen this site?

No but just snooped around it. Doesn’t seem to offer much for free so I couldn’t dig into anything. Do you use it and think it’s legit?
