Ukraine: War Tribunal Against Russia Before We Talk Peace

Kyiv's demands have assured a continued conflict.

Dmytro Kuleba, the Ukrainian foreign minister, said in an interview published Tuesday that Kyiv will only sit down for peace negotiations with Russia after its enemy faces a war-crimes tribunal.

Kuleba made the comment to The Associated Press. The report said “any peace talks would be months away and highly contingent on complex international negotiations.”

AntiWar, which first reported on Kuleba’s comment, noted that the remark is the “latest sign that there’s no end in sight to the fighting in Ukraine, as Russia would never comply with Kuleba’s conditions, and the US continues to escalate military aid and other kinds of support for Kyiv.”

Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s top diplomat, said Monday that Ukraine will recognize and adhere to the Kremlin’s demands or the issue will be decided by the Russian army, which has called for a partial mobilization and is training hundreds of thousands of troops for another offensive.

Lavrov spoke to the Tass News Agency and said Russia’s proposal’s are well known to “the enemy.” Russia wants total demilitarization and denazification of the territories controlled by the [Ukrainian] regime, the “elimination of threats to Russia's security emanating from there, including our new lands.”

“The point is simple: Fulfill them for your own good. Otherwise, the issue will be decided by the Russian army,” he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an interview that aired on Christmas Russia and said he is willing to negotiate for a peaceful resolution in the Ukraine War, which was swiftly rejected by Kyiv, which has been the target of massive bombing campaigns to take out its power infrastructure.

“We are ready to negotiate with everyone involved about acceptable solutions, but that is up to them - we are not the ones refusing to negotiate, they are,” Putin said.

Putin said it is clear that the West is trying to break apart Russia and that the war is justified.

“I believe that we are acting in the right direction,” he told state television. “We are defending our national interests, the interests of our citizens, our people. And we have no other choice but to protect our citizens.”

Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to the U.S., criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s trip to Washington to meet President Joe Biden and address Congress as a bad joke. 

The diplomat called the former comedian’s trip an example of how the U.S. has no interest in ending the conflict, and will continue to use Ukrainian forces to carry out its own proxy war. 

"The head of the Kiev regime's visit to Washington, staged in Hollywood style, has ultimately confirmed that the administration's conciliatory statements about the lack of intention to enter into a confrontation with Russia are an 'empty phrase,'" he said.

He blamed Washington for pushing this “manic idea of defeating the Russians on the battlefield. He said the escalation can lead to consequences “impossible to even imagine.” 

Forget About It 

The western media no longer reports on the U.S.-backed overthrow of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.

Elected in 2010 to succeed Viktor Yushchenko, who was championed by the U.S. when it ostensibly launched the Orange Revolution in 2004 that put him in power, Ukraine’s Central Election Commission and international observers declared that the 2010 presidential election was legitimate and fairly conducted. 

Also completely absent in the Western media reports is the role Washington and Victoria Nuland, the Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs at the time, played in the overthrow of its government in 2014. 

A report from 2014 in the Trends Journal laid out the political maneuvers at the time in Ukraine: “Washington’s coup in Ukraine brought not only a threat to the Russian population in Ukraine but also a direct strategic threat to Russia itself.” 

Indeed, in early February 2014, a recording was leaked of Nuland, telling Geoffrey Pyatt, the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, that the UN was on board to “help glue” the plan to replace Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovych with Arxeniy Yatsenyuk. 

“Yats is the guy,” Nuland informed Pyatt, urging her to move quickly because “the Russians will be working behind the scenes to torpedo” the deal. “Fuck the EU!” Nuland told Pyatt. 

“Exactly,” he responded. Shortly thereafter, Yanukovych was overthrown and “Yats” became president.
