WELCOME TO WWIII: U.S. Behind Deadly Strike on Crimean Beach, Russia Says

Russia assigned blame to the U.S. over missile strikes in Crimea that killed at least five people, including two children, and injured more than 120 – stating that the weapons fired in the attack were Washington-provided ATAMS with cluster warheads.

President Vladimir Putin has been “in constant contact with the military” since the attack, Reuters reported.

RT, the Russian news outlet, said Russian air defenses managed to knock out four of five missiles fired from the Ukrainian side. The missile that caused the damage was “hit but veered off course” and detonated over Sevastopol, a Black Sea port city.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said U.S. forces are ultimately behind ATACM missile strikes because targets are selected using Washington-provided intelligence. Unconfirmed reports on social media said a U.S. Air Force RQ-4B Global Hawk is still flying over the Black Sea near Crimea, “hiding among commercial flight traffic.”

“Therefore, responsibility for the deliberate missile attack on civilians in Sevastopol lies primarily with Washington, which supplied these weapons to Ukraine, as well as the Kyiv regime, from whose territory this attack was launched,” the ministry said in a statement, according to the report.

The U.S. is fully committed to Ukraine’s war effort against Moscow and recently gave Kyiv permission to use American weapons to strike targets inside Russia, which was seen as a significant escalation. Ukraine has suffered a series of defeats on the battlefield and has turned to targeting soft targets to keep its Western backers convinced that it is still a viable investment.

The Financial Times reported last week that the U.S. has put Ukraine on the top of its list for Patriot interceptor missiles – and put other allies at the back of the line.

John Kirby, the White House’s National Security Council’s spokesman, called the decision “difficult but necessary,” according to the paper.

“We’re going to reprioritize the deliveries of these exports so that those missiles rolling off the production line will now be provided to Ukraine,” he said, according to the paper.

Last year, Sergey Shoigu, the Russian defense minister at the time, told reporters that if UK or U.S.-supplied missiles were used to strike Crimea, it would officially put the U.S. and U.K. at war with Russia.

Shoigu accurately predicted that Kyiv would use U.S. HIMARS and British Storm Shadow cruise missiles to attack Crimea. He said if Ukraine uses these missiles in such an attack, it will mean the U.S. and Britain “would be fully dragged into the conflict and would entail immediate strikes on decision-making centers in Ukraine.”

Alexander Formanchuk, the chairman of Crimea's Civic Chamber, told Russia’s RIA Novosti last year that “Any attempt to seize Crimea and return it to Ukraine will immediately escalate into a thermonuclear global conflict. Russia will not forgive this.”
