Lawrence Wilkerson, retired US Army colonel and former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, said in an interview Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will likely be very deliberate in his response to the massive drone attack, and will devastate Ukraine.

The Ukrainian drone attack last weekend took out part of Russia’s nuclear triad, and, according to Moscow’s nuclear doctrine, the Kremlin can decide to use nukes in response to the drone strikes on its strategic bombers.

Wilkerson said it is unlikely that Putin will choose that option, but he does expect the Russian leader to “devastate Ukraine,” and possibly take out Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his team.

“I expect he's going to be very dramatic, very painstaking, very careful, but he is going to devastate Ukraine,” Wilkerson told Judge Andrew Napolitano’s “Judging Freedom.”

Wilkerson said he is convinced that Sen. Lindsey Graham, the warmonger from South Carolina, wants to see Russia respond with a nuclear weapon and wants the U.S. to execute a first strike.

“I’m convinced of that,” Wilkerson said. “The man is certifiable.”

Putin announced last year that Moscow adjusted its nuclear doctrine amid increased weapons support for Ukraine and discussions about allowing Kyiv to use Western-provided long-range missiles to hit targets deep inside Russia.

The move was seen as a decision by Moscow to lower its nuclear threshold. The doctrine stated that Moscow could use nukes in response to a nuclear attack or conventional strike that creates “a critical threat to their sovereignty and/or territorial integrity.”
