Zelensky’s Office: No Chance for ‘Minsk III,’ Leaves Out Fact That Minsk II Was a Fraud
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the Minsk agreement served to buy time for Ukraine to rearm.
A top adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky threw cold water on any chances for peace after the high-profile Saudi summit last weekend and said there can be no compromise until Russian troops withdraw to the country’s 1991 border.”
“Any scenario of a ceasefire and freezing of the war in Ukraine in the current disposition will mean only one thing – Russia’s actual victory and [President Vladimir] Putin’s personal triumph,” Mikhail Podoliak, the adviser, posted on X.
He continued, “One should have no illusions: any ‘Minsk-3’ will only prolong the war in the future. It is precisely the ‘abandonment of illusions’ that is happening today in many countries that yesterday misjudged Russia and its intention to ‘kill’ international law.”
This would be a great defeat for the Western world and the end of the current global security order. The question is: for the sake of what? Freezing the war will not end it and will not diminish the suffering of the Ukrainian people. On the contrary, if Moscow retains half of Ukraine and goes on hiatus, it will begin preparing for the next round. And as soon as the political leaders in key Western countries change, the war will return - bigger, bloodier, and better prepared. In this case, a devastated Ukraine will face this round in a much worse position and with far less obvious prospects than it could have - unless NATO leaders change their minds and show the political will to grant emergency membership. What is the conclusion? There can be no negotiation process in the current disposition. The status quo must be changed on the battlefield. This means... more weapons, missiles and aircraft.
His comments came after a summit in Saudi Arabia that some analysts said was encouraging.
TRENDPOST: Minsk II was a fraud.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview last week that he informed the key players in the 2019 Minsk II Agreements—then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron—that the deal was essentially a “concession” and he would not abide by its guidelines.
Merkel admitted the deal was intended to give Ukraine the chance to arm itself for a conflict with Russia.
“The 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give Ukraine time,” Merkel told a German outlet. “It also used this time to become stronger as you can see today.”
